'ADORED'

I chose the title Adored because this story explores the past of Samarth’s parents—the characters from my previous work, Beloved. A related name felt appropriate, as this story examines the roots of love, devotion, and control that later shape the next generation.

© Insiya Khan, This story is a work of fiction, born entirely from my imagination.

It has no connection to any real person’s life, events, or places.

This story is not written to promote or glorify negativity, violence, or obscenity. It is written to reflect the social realities and circumstances of the 1950s–60s, a time when traditions, power structures, and marital dynamics were very different from today.

As a woman myself, I do not endorse the actions or beliefs portrayed in this story. It is written purely for narrative and entertainment purposes, with the intention of exploring characters, psychology, and generational trauma.

Please read it with that understanding and context.

CHARACTERS:

Mahesh Singh (20)

Grumpy, short-tempered, and a man of few words. Mahesh is sharp-witted, intelligent, and perceptive. He does not ignore injustice and speaks up when something feels wrong—an uncommon trait in his environment.

This is precisely what his father admires about him, seeing in Mahesh the qualities of a future village headman.

Mahesh has a wheatish complexion, dark brown eyes, and an impressive height and commanding personality.

Manan Singh (22): Mahesh’s elder brother. He has always considered himself important due to his father’s position as village sarpanch. Because of this entitlement, he neglected his education, which eventually caused his parents to lose faith in him.

Sindhu Singh (19): Manan’s wife. Married for almost two years, yet unable to conceive despite repeated efforts—something that has begun to define her worth in the household.

Lalita Singh (34): Mahesh’s mother. Strict, traditional, and deeply influenced by societal norms, lineage, and expectations.

Rajesh Singh (39): Mahesh’s father and the current village sarpanch. A man of authority whose word carries weight both inside and outside the household.

THE VARMA FAMILY

Samriddhi Varma (15) : The third daughter of her parents, and the most innocent of all. Her beauty lies in her simplicity, softness, and unassuming nature.

She is short in stature, fair-complexioned, with light brown eyes, a small nose, full lips, and a smile that enhances her quiet charm.

Prakash Varma (38): Samriddhi’s father, a landowner who prioritizes social standing and survival over emotional attachment.

Sita Varma (33): Samriddhi’s mother, shaped by compromise, tradition, and silence.

Suman (19): Samriddhi’s eldest sister.

Rekha (17) :Samriddhi’s second elder sister.
